Congregations
have promoted health for centuries through worship,
music, sharing, and caring. A new dimension is the
addition of a registered nurse to the ministry team.
Faith Community Nursing (also called Parish or
Congregational Nursing) is truly a ministry because
it is rooted in faith and extends God’s healing and
compassion to those in need. The number of
partnerships between congregations and healthcare
providers is growing because of the emerging role of
the faith community nurse (FCN).
Some FCNs function as paid staff of the church with
reporting roles and in collaboration with other
ministries of the church. Most serve as volunteer
leaders or members of a multidisciplinary health
ministry. Nevertheless, the primary goal remains the
same - to assist individuals in integrating health
and faith through functional roles such as:
· Personal health counselor
· Health educator
· Health advocate
· Referral agent
· Coordinator of volunteers
· Accessing and developing support groups
